As Creosote was found to be much more hazardous than originally thought, the product was banned for public sale from June 30, 2003. However, it is still available for small holdings and farms upon request.

As response to this, Bird Brand have produced their Bird Brand Ecosote Wood Preserver. This HSE (Health and Safety Exective) approved preservative has been voted the best Creosote alternative due to it's low hazard properties. Best used for external timber surfaces, Ecosote is a eco friendly domestic wood finisher to keep your fences and wooden cladding protected with a colour fast finish.
